Public board partners with UW on free STEM program aimed at girls

School board looks to get girls and non binary students into STEM

In an effort to get some new faces into the world of physics, the school board is offering a free workshop to girls and non-binary students and encourage them to explore STEM. 

The Waterloo Regional District School Board is partnering with the world class physics and astronomy department at the University of Waterloo to offer free the free workshop for students in Grades seven and eight.

The class will take place on campus at the Science Teaching Complex, 200 University Ave W. on Nov. 11 for free hands-on activity workshops, inspiring talks, and a panel discussions. 

This event is free, and participants are expected to stay for the whole event with registration currently open. 

"If you are in middle school and have an inquisitive, creative mind this one-day, free event will broaden your understanding of what physics is, what physicists do, and what is so interesting about this field," said the UofW on their website. 

"Join us on November 11 to connect with like-minded students in exciting workshops, meet role models, and hear mentors share their experiences."

Attendees will choose their top four workshops and are guaranteed attendance in two of those. 

The schedule follows a normal school day starting from around 9:30 a.m. and ending at 3 p.m.

  • 10:05-10:55 Keynotes lecture. Dr. Brenda Lee and Dr. Ana Ennis
  • 11:00 Remembrance Day Moment of Silence
  • 11:05-12:05 - Workshop 1
  • 12:05-12:45 Lunch (provided)
  • 12:45-2:00 Workshop 2
  • 2:00-2:45 Panel Q&A with current Physics & Astronomy students
  • 2:45 Closing comments
  • 3:00 Student pick-up
