As the weather starts getting warmer, the Waterloo Region District School Board is encouraging its students to get outside and be active.

With April being Spring into Spring month, students, staff and families are being asked to consider alternate, more sustainable modes of transportation.

Walking, biking or wheeling to school can benefit physical health, helps with a higher sense of alertness within the classroom and facilitates social interactions.

The initiative, run in partnership with Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region and Ontario Active School Travel, also assists in reducing fossils fuels and creating a safer transportation network around local schools.

"We all have a part in building schools and communities that support all forms of transportation," the board said on its website.

"Walking, biking or wheeling are safe, healthy choices for students and families making the journey to school. While this is only one month of action, we hope it inspires many to choose active travel more often despite the unpredictable spring weather."

Students can track how many days and how far they travel for a chance to win one of five $20 Indigo gift cards. Registration can be done here and must be completed by April 30.

Those learning remotely or who are required to travel via vehicle transportation can take time out of their day to walk around the neighbourhood.
