A spokesperson with the Waterloo Region District School Board confirms the organization was recently the victim of a cyber incident.

The board is now working on restoring its IT systems, and safeguarding personal information.

In a email statement, board spokesperson Estefania Brandenstein, said they have been in touch with staff, as well as students and their families.

"We will continue to share information directly with those who are impacted. We would ask for patience as experts have advised that it could take weeks to fully investigate and gain answers as to how this occurred and what has been impacted." Brandenstein explained.

Brandenstein said the incident is both serious and concerning, adding that cyber incidents are occurring more frequently in the education sector.

In an email sent to parents, the board says it was made aware of the incident on July 10th, and an unauthorized person accessed and removed certain data from their systems.

That same email states, the board believes any risk to students' sensitive information is low.
