Residents turn out to support YWCA Cambridge Feminist Night Market

The night market benefitted the YWCA Cambridge's programming at The W

The Feminist Night Market was a busy place Saturday.

Crochet critters, beaded jewellery and fall themed gifts were just a handful of the items available at the fifteen vendors that were set up at 20 Dickson St.

And it was all in support of YWCA Cambridge programming at The W.

The W hosts programs for cis and trans women and girls, gender-diverse and Two-Spirit people. Programs are participant-led and provided free of charge to ensure an inclusive environment.

With intimate partner violence recently being declared an epidemic by the city and Region of Waterloo, events like the night market and Walk a Mile in Their Shoes brings much needed awareness.

It's an issue that's been in the national spotlight of late after four people were killed, including three children, and another wounded during a murder-suicide in Sault Ste. Marie earlier this week.

Kim Decker, CEO of the YWCA Cambridge, has continually stressed the importance of bringing the issue of gender and intimate partner violence to light as a way to help keep these unthinkable acts from happening.

"The key to ending gender-based violence is having conversations, and having conversations with kids," Decker told CambridgeToday during the preparation for the Walk a Mile in Their Shoes event.

"Those are the conversations we have to start, and men and boys need to be part of those conversations as well."

Decker emphasized it's everyone's responsibility to make sure violence is prevented.

"What's important to know is gender-base violence touches every part of society, from families and women to youth," she said.

"It's really important that we get the message out and it has to be more consistent. We all have a part to play."

The night market runs until 8 p.m.
