Caleb the lab is excited to welcome residents to his garage sale on Saturday in support of the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.

Emily Rose was on the fence when it came to deciding on her next furry friend.

Whether to get another dog or foster through a program in need was the question she tossed back and forth in her mind.

"I'm an accountant by day and I got involved with Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides in August of 2022," Rose said.

"I sensed they needed fosters and volunteers."

From there, it was an easy fit as she welcomed Caleb the lab into her home.

Rose then raised him until he was recalled for formal training. Unfortunately, as he went through the training for seizure response, it didn't end up working out and Rose eventually adopted him back.

But just because he wasn't placed with a person to serve, it didn't mean the end of their involvement with the organization.

On Saturday, they'll be hosting a garage sale with 100 per cent of the proceeds being donated to the cause through the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides happening on May 26. Last year, the sale raised $900.

Kids items, books, dog items, houseware, small appliances and clothing has been donated by friends and family.

It's all part of Rose and her Lions Club's goal of raising $25,000. Currently, they've totalled roughly $14,000.

The Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides train in seven areas, including vision, hearing, autism, seizure response, diabetic alert, facility support and services for people across Canada.

It costs approximately $35,000 to train and place each dog.

"The people who receive the dogs get them for free," Rose said.

"I believe everyone should be able to have dignity and independence in life. Every dollar goes to benefit a Canadian in need."

Even though Caleb didn't end up being placed, Rose said she's met so many great people through the organization and seen plenty of examples of the impact dog guides can have.

"I’ve been able to meet people who received one and they're so gracious," she said.

"Its very heartwarming and it might sound cliche that the money goes to a good cause, but it could go to someone that’s your neighbour."

The garage sale will happen rain or shine at 61 Parkwood Dr. from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
