Small fire reported in rooftop mechanical room at Cambridge Memorial

Cambridge Fire Department is on scene of the fire, which occurred in Wing B

A small fire broke out in a "penthouse" mechanical room at Cambridge Memorial Hospital this afternoon.

Cambridge fire crews were able to quickly bring the blaze under control.

"We're comfortable in saying that the fire started on the roof and was quickly contained," said John Percy, captain fire prevention officer.

The Wing B tower where the fire occurred, is mostly undergoing renovations, said hospital spokesman Stephan Beckhoff in an email to CambridgeToday.

According to Percy, smoke from the fire travelled down an elevator shaft in the tower, forcing the evacuation of staff and patients from the B Wing as fire crews arrived.

Fire crews are still canvasing the area to check for smoke damage and will be letting patients and staff back in the hospital soon.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but Percy is confident that the construction in the wing could have played a factor in starting the small blaze.

There are no injuries reported and the hospital is expected to reopen after fire crews give the all clear.

"Hospital staff acted quickly and implemented their protocol to get everyone out safely," said Percy. "This just goes to show that having a fire plan is the most effective way of saving lives."

Beckhoff said the hospital is working with fire crews to determine a damage estimate, but the total amount is unknown at this time.

One lane on Coronation Boulevard was closed to accommodate fire trucks and delays in the area are expected.
