Soroptimist International of Cambridge is hoping golfers around the region will tee up to support higher education at its golf tournament later this month.

Looking for ways to increase its impact within the community, Soroptimist Trust was created in May of 2022 as a separate charity to provide publicly available grants and financial assistant to individuals in need.

Established in 1981, Soroptimist Cambridge prides itself on supporting projects that benefit women and girls locally.

"We wanted to expand the impact that Soroptimist has had over the club’s 43 years in Cambridge, and by creating a separate charitable entity we hope to gain additional support from our local businesses and access available grants to further our contributions to our community," Trustee Yvonne Kaine said.

"Monies raised by Soroptimist Trust will be used primarily for our 'Envision Education Grants' program. This is a program designed to provide financial support to individuals pursuing post-secondary education or skills training in an effort to improve quality of life for themselves and their families."

Net proceeds from the golf tournament, which takes place May 24 at the Cambridge Golf Club, will directly support the program. The money can be used for costs associated with education and necessary skills training.

Every year, the trust benefits a different segment of the community. It's currently being used to assist women, transgender and gender-diverse individuals working towards a career in the trades.

"Education leads to social and economic empowerment, and educating women can have far-reaching effects on the economy and the girls they're raising," Kaine said.

"Additional financial support will be given to registered charities working to reduce poverty in our community."

The tournament begins at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start in a scramble format and ends with a three-course pig roast dinner. A complimentary welcome bag is included and there are chances to win prizes.

"We're looking forward to having community members come together for a common cause, enjoying time together, while raising money for charitable purposes," Kaine said.

The cost is $160 or $55 for just dinner.

Registration is open until May 10 and can be done at soroptimisttrust.ca.
