With a grant from the Region of Waterloo Upstream Fund, SPECTRUM will be running young adult discussion groups beginning in February.

A new monthly discussion group is coming to SPECTRUM Waterloo Region.

The organization will be hosting 2SLGBTQIA+ meetings for young adults between the ages of 25 and 40.

Meetings will take place the second Wednesday of each month starting on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.

Scott Williams, executive director of SPECTRUM, saw a definite need for supports in this specific age group. The idea came from a previous monthly networking program that ran in 2020-2021.

“There are so few spaces dedicated to 2SLGBTQIA+ people, young 2SLGBTQIA+ adults really miss out on opportunities to socialize and meet new people,” Williams said.

“In 2021-2022 we ran a monthly networking group thanks to a grant from the KW Community Foundation. That pilot was group was successful.”

Funding for the current program comes from a grant from the Region of Waterloo Upstream Fund.

“We applied for a grant from the Region of Waterloo Upstream Fund to continue it as a monthly discussion group,” Williams said.

“We've hired two co-facilitators who will run the group for the next two years. Our hope is that this group helps young 2SLGBTQIA+ adults find community and a sense of belonging.”

The meetings are open to those living in Cambridge and can be attended in-person or virtually.
