After a problem with the sterilization equipment for surgical equipment led to the cancellation of more than three dozen surgeries at Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Wednesday and Thursday, the hospital says it will resume normal surgical operations Friday.
Patients whose surgeries were cancelled will be prioritized for rescheduling the hospital said.
The problem with the sterilization equipment was identified Tuesday when instruments that had be sterilized appeared discoloured.
"Reprocessing of surgical instruments is a complex process," said a news release.
"Over the past few days, we have reviewed in detail all of our processes. Guided by external support, some adjustments have been made and we are confident that our surgical instruments once again meet the highest quality and safety standards."
“Patient safety is our number one priority and I am confident in the resumption of surgical services to support patients in our community” said Stephanie Pearsall, vice president clinical services and chief nursing executive Cambridge Memorial Hospital.
“On behalf of the hospital I apologize for the disruption and will prioritize patients that were cancelled. Please know that our teams have worked tirelessly to ensure that we are able to provide safe care. Thank you to the community for your patience and support.”
