Cambridge Shelter Corp. is looking for donations to help its residents get the essentials as they get settled in their new homes.

The non-profit runs The Bridges shelter at 26 Simcoe St. in Cambridge. The housing offers 64 emergency shelter beds for men and women experiencing homelessness and 20 bachelor apartments to provide supported second-stage housing.

“Our mission is to provide safe shelter, and to offer programs and services in support of the hopes and needs of people dealing with life issues,” said the shelter corp on their website.

In a tweet the organization is reaching out to the community to try and get some of the essentials for the new residents.

Jake Reimer is a housing support worker at Bridges and said, they are trying to collect the basic stuff, the things we might take for granted.

“A lot of times when people come from nothing or like an emergency situation or a shelter, they don't have the basic stuff. And so we try to collect as much as possible a bunch of new items to get them settled,” Reimer said.

They are looking for everyday things like, shower curtains, bath mats, plungers, dish racks, cutlery and dishes.

Reimer said since the pandemic, The Bridges has housed over 180 people and helped them on the path to permanent housing.

“There’s a comforting sense that they're finally getting back on track. There's no better feeling than getting your life back together after an emergency situation,” he said.
