The Waterloo Regional Police Service is once again looking for a new junior police chief for its annual ‘Chief for a Day’ contest.

The contest, which launches today, is open to all Waterloo region students in Grade 5 to Grade 7.

Students are asked to write a short essay describing what they would do to make a positive contribution in their community if they were chief for a day.

Winners (a junior Chief and two junior Deputy Chiefs) will be announced on May 15 during Police Week in Ontario.

Winners will report for duty at police headquarters on June 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"We're thrilled to open our doors to aspiring youth in Waterloo Region and look forward to hearing their ideas about what they can do to make a meaningful and positive contribution to the community,” said chief of police Mark Crowell. “Together, we can pave the way for a safer, more vibrant Waterloo Region.”

Once chosen, the junior chief and junior deputy chiefs will have the opportunity to get fitted in a police uniform, tour police headquarters, check out the inside of a police cruiser, visit our canine unit, interact with police officers throughout the day, and more.

Essays can be submitted to police headquarters, located at 200 Maple Grove Road in Cambridge, through WRPS's social media accounts or by e-mail to [email protected].

Essays must be submitted by May 12, and include a name and contact information.
