WRDSB releases EQAO assessment results

A new framework and mode of delivery means a new baseline has been set to monitor student success

The results for the EQAO assessment show above provincial averages in Grade 6 reading, writing and mathematics, but fall below provincial averages in reading, writing and mathematics in Grade 3 and mathematics in Grade 9.

Waterloo Regional District School Board students assessment for reading, writing and math shows they are on par, or slightly surpassing provincial averages according to the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) results.

Students at WRDSB schools performed at or above the provincial average in Grade 6 reading, writing and mathematics.

Grade 10 students who were successful in taking the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) for the first time surpassed the provincial average.

However, results for reading, writing and mathematics in Grade 3 and mathematics in Grade 9 were below provincial average. When it came to previously eligible students who took the OSSLT, their results also came in below the average across the province.

“While we know we have work to do, we are really proud of what students and staff have accomplished during these unprecedented times,” jeewan chanicka, director of education at the WRDSB said in a release.

"These results help us better understand where WRDSB students currently are, and some of the work we must undertake to help students catch up. We remain committed to improving the achievement and well-being of all our students and look forward to further unpacking this data alongside other relevant information with the goal of best-preparing students for the world they are going into.”

A number of changes have also been made to the EQAO testing since the COVID-19 pandemic.

There has been a new elementary school mathematics curriculum and a new de-streamed secondary curriculum, a new EQAO framework and a new mode of delivery for the EQAO assessment.

Due to these changes, the 2021-2022 results has created a new baseline for monitoring going forward.
