Matt Smith is no stranger to coaching high level goaltenders.

He’s been helping produce prospects out of his Industrial Road business, Matt Smith Goaltending Inc., since 2009.

Now the Kitchener resident will take on the responsibility of goaltending coach for the Ontario Hockey League’s Owen Sound Attack.

It’s not Smith’s first job in the OHL, as he spent six seasons in the same capacity with the Guelph Storm followed by a two-year stint with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

“We look forward to having Matt a part of the organization. He has done a great job developing goalies in the past and has a tremendous knowledge of the OHL” Attack head coach Dale DeGray said in a release on the team’s website.

“I look forward to seeing him push our goalie prospects and help them reach their personal goals.”

Smith has seen nine of his clients drafted or signed by National Hockey League clubs, three of which have played in NHL games over the past three seasons.

“When Mr. DeGray presented the idea of coaching in Owen Sound, I felt very fortunate. It is such a privilege to coach in this league,” Smith said.

“The organization feels like a great fit both from a community and location standpoint. I'm excited to get to know the staff and players better in the coming months and can’t wait to get started.”
