Cambridge Sports Awards are back to honour athletic contributions

Athletes and contributors to the local sports scene will be recognized at the Armenian Centre in November

University of Nebraska gymnast Emma Spence is up for the Tim Turow Award as Cambridge's Athlete of the Year.

After a three year hiatus, the Cambridge Sports Awards banquet is returning on Nov. 3.

The awards, which pay tribute to the city's finest athletes, teams, organizations and contributors, will be given out at the Armenian Centre.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of celebrating local sports accomplishments and is the first since before the pandemic.

So far, four awards have already been determined.

Emma Lawson has been named the Professional Athlete of the Year after finishing second at the 2023 Crossfit Games.

The Jacob Hespeler Secondary School junior girls volleyball team is the High School Team of the Year, while the Scorpions U14 volleyball team is the George Hill Team of the Year and Cambridge Soccer will be honoured as the Organization of the Year.

Finalists have been announced for the Tim Turow Award for Cambridge's Athlete of the Year. Debbie Bulten, Dave Dafoe, Ella Gruber,  Janna Hawash, Noelle Leslie, Julien McKay an Emma Spence are all up for the award. Spence was the most recent recipient in 2019.

The Don and Benita Contributor award will also be announced at the banquet.

All past Tim Turow award winners have been invited back and Anne Benedetti will serve as a guest speaker. Benedetti is a former lacrosse player at Queens, Western and Oxford University and an inductee to the Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame.

The master of ceremonies for the evening is Galt Collegiate Institute graduate, comedian and award winning actor Nigel Downer.

Cocktail hour begins at 5 p.m. with a buffet style dinner starting at 6 p.m. followed by the awards presentation.

Tickets are $50 for adults and $25 for youth under 14.
