Cambridge defenceman Chandler Romeo has made the next step in his hockey career.

After recently completing his fourth season in the Ontario Hockey League, Romeo signed an amateur tryout agreement with the Orlando Solar Bears of the ECHL.

The Solar Bears are an affiliate of the National Hockey League's Tampa Bay Lightning.

Romeo, an original seventh round selection of the Ottawa Senators in the 2021 NHL draft, spent time with the Hamilton Bulldogs, Sarnia Sting and most recently the Guelph Storm during his time in the OHL.

Over the course of 189 career games, he scored 12 goals and added 31 assists for 43 points. He also racked up 218 penalty minutes.

The ECHL is a tier below the NHL's first minor league system, the American Hockey League.

An ATO is usually a short-term contract that allows teams to sign undrafted or unsigned players out of college or junior hockey.

The Solar Bears completed their regular season this past weekend and finished with a record of 38-24-7-3.

They now await their first round opponent in the Kelly Cup playoffs.
