Following a pause of pandemic proportions, the Cambridge Ice Hounds are ready to hit the ice again on Oct. 30 at Galt Arena, thanks in part to an $18,000 grant from the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities.

In February, the Canadian Tire Corporation announced an additional $12 million commitment to Jumpstart’s Sport Relief Fund to help sport and recreation organizations build back sport and play in Canada. The funds the Ice Hounds have received will help offset the cost of ice time and make hockey gear available to more than 50 children and adults with physical and/or cognitive disabilities in the program.

About the funding

Jumpstart conducted a State of Sport study via Ipsos which revealed the pandemic has not only impacted current access to sport and play but has real long-term effects as well. The Cambridge Ice Hounds and the communities it serves have experienced the impact of the pandemic first-hand.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the mental and physical well-being of many of our athletes and their families” says Cam Linwood, President and Head Coach of the Ice Hounds program. “There are simply no words that can describe the moments when our athletes put on their jersey and a new pair of skates or hockey gloves this season and see that hockey really is back”.

Jumpstart has now disbursed funding to more than 1,200 organizations across Canada through Jumpstart’s Sport Relief Fund.

About the program

Now in their 15th season, the Cambridge Ice Hounds Hockey Club is a program developed for children and adults (ages 5+) with physical and/or cognitive disabilities which prevent them from participating in conventional hockey programs. The organization plays and practices at Galt Arena, in Cambridge, on Saturday afternoons between October and March. In 2021, more than 50 athletes have registered for the program so far, supported by a dedicated group of volunteers on and off the ice.
