Two Scorpion Club teams sting all-comers at volleyball nationals

Rise 17U girls and Inferno 18U girls bring home the gold

It was a magical weekend for two Cambridge Scorpions girls volleyball teams at the national championships in Edmonton this past weekend.

The Scorpions 17U Rise and 18U Inferno teams came up with gold medals in their respective age groups and tiers. It is the first time in the 13-year history of the club that two teams have won gold medals on the same day at the Volleyball Canada nationals.

Teams are ranked nationwide and are put into their respective tiers to play teams from across the country.

Scorpions 17U Rise Highlights

The Rise didn't lose a match during the three days of play. The Rise consists of Jaimie Lawson, Jessica Muir, Taylor Castelli, Jillian Fennema, Sydney Gallaugher, Alex Rahemtulla, Emily Penson, Kately Coelho, Sana Faridi. Head coach is Samantha Warner and assistant coach is Madison Coolman.

On Day 1 the Rise defeated Avalon VL from Newfoundland/Labrador, the Sharks and 17U Ultimate teams from Alberta. All games were tough three-set wins. 

On Day 2 they defeated West Coast VC from British Columbia, Mavericks VC from Ottawa and Rustlers VC from Saskatchewan. On the final day, they beat the Avalon VC again, in a tight three-set semifinal, the Scorpions disposed of the Focus Black VC from British Columbia. 

In the Tier 16 gold-medal game they disposed of the Ravens VC from Alberta in straight sets 25-18, 25-10.

Scorpions 18U Inferno Highlights

The team didn't lose a set all tournament. The Inferno consists of Gabby Krilic, Claudia Seeley-Baechler, Sena Suzuki, Grace McLean, Ella Fewster, Ashlynn Langstone, Kylie LAwson, Eliza Myers, Roslyn Hergott, Zerahiah Colquhoin. The head coach is Kelsey Caza and assistant coach is Jaaziah Colquhoun.

On Day 1 the Inferno won in straight sets against the KVA Pack VC from British Columbia, Scarborough Titans VC from Ontario and the Black Gold VC from Alberta. 

Day 2 saw the Scorpions 18u Team win all three matches against Rusters VC, Saskatchewan, Durham Attack VC, Ontario, and the Lion VC from Alberta. On the final date they beat the Guelph Gryphons, Ontario. In the semis they defeated East Kootenay VC, British Columbia. 

In the Tier 10 gold-medal game it was two Ontario teams battling it out. The Inferno prevailed over the Storm VC 25-20 and 25-20 to capture the title.
