Quick rise in gas prices forcing residents to change their plans

Cambridge residents are feeling the rise in price, canceling some summer plans.

Over the weekend gas prices jumped quickly to over 2 dollars a litre, which also created a quick price tag shock when people filled up for the week ahead.

In the Waterloo Region gas prices are up 9.9 cents from last week’s average of 197.6 per litre.

In just a month gas prices jumped 32.2 cents from the region’s average of 175.3 per litre, reported from GasBuddy, a site that tracks gas prices in the US and Canada.

Since last year, gas prices in the region have nearly doubled, going up 79.2 cents per litre from the average of 128.3.

Local Cambridge resident George Jupp typically spends his summers driving around Ontario with his family in their trailer. This year, they plan on staying home more to avoid the high prices.

“It’s a tad bit ridiculous. It certainly obviously affects your day to day finances,” he said.

“My truck costs around $250 to fill up right now. This one here costs $185 to fill up,” he said referring to a company car.

On May 16, the region recorded its highest average for regular gas at 206.8 per litre since GasBuddy started recording the prices in 2008. The lowest price is listed as 63.6 from 2008.

Local Asloob Arnughan is worried about the rise in gas prices, saying it has already affected his family’s day to day life.

“It is too high for us and we are very concerned about the gas prices because I’m a courier. I put gas from my own pocket. I need gas to go back to a dollar fifty at least. Everything for us has been affected.”

“Everybody is feeling it, not only me.”

As of today in Cambridge, the cheapest gas price on GasBuddy is listed as 202.6 per litre with the highest gas price in the city listed as 208.7 per litre.
