WHL roundup: Winterhawks outlast Chiefs in a wild 8-7 shootout win

PORTLAND, Ore. — Jack O'Brien and Robbie Fromm-Delorme each scored twice as the Portland Winterhawks won a wild 8-7 Western Hockey League game in a Sunday night shootout against the never-say-die Spokane Chiefs.

The Winterhawks jumped out to an early 4-1 lead and appeared well on their way to an 11th WHL victory at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. But the resilient Chiefs scored five times in the second period and tied the game 6-6 heading into the final frame.

Fromm-Delorme scored at 2:17 of the third period to give the Winterhawks a 7-6 lead. But Ty Cheveldayoff scored his third goal of the night at 19:25 to force overtime. There was no scoring in the five-minute overtime so the squads went to the shootout, where the Winterhawks outscored the visitors 2-1 for the win.

Ryan McCleary, Luca Cagnoni and Gabe Klassen also scored for the Winterhawks (11-1-1-1).

Raegan Wiles scored twice for the Chiefs (3-10-0-1), with singles netted by Blake Swetlikoff and Carter Streek.

The Chiefs were 2-for-4 on the power play, while the Winterhawks were 4-for-6 with the man advantage. The teams each had 38 shots on goal through regulation and overtime.
