JANUARY 12, 1943 – DECEMBER 10, 2023

We sadly announce the peaceful passing of Jim Duench, age 80, on December 10 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, to meet his Lord and Saviour. With good humour and positivity, Jim faced numerous health challenges, including body inclusion myositis, which left him unable to swallow the last 3 years, but able to appreciate the little things in life like a kind word, a shared video, or a ride in his prized 1988 Corvette convertible or on his John Deere tractor.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Diane, who selflessly cared for him in their home. He is also missed by his son, John (Kristine) and grandsons Zak (Chloe), Hayden (Kailey) and Janson, as well as his brother-in-law, Dennis (Wilma) and sister-in-law Martha and many nieces and nephews. Jim also loved his daughters, Jeannette (Kevin) Barendregt and Jennifer (Doug) Jonas as well as his grandsons, Easton and Riley. He is predeceased by his brother, Arnold Duench.

Jim’s passions were woodworking, Nascar racing and taking care of the home he built. In 1975, he established James Duench Woodworking. He later incorporated Duench Contractors with his son and partner John. After 37 years practicing his trade as a master craftsman of cabinetry making and fine carpentry, Jim retired in 2012, but continued to take an active interest in all projects right up until his passing. Jim remains the essence of Duench Contractors, with his vision now executed by John and Zak, a third generation builder.

Heartfelt thanks to the many doctors and caregivers who attended to Jim over the last many years, including Dr. Holling and Michelle, and especially Kam whom Jim trusted beyond all others with his daily care. You are a special man. Thank you also to the staff at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, especially Linda who cared for Jim with compassion.

Expressions of sympathy may be donated to the Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank to assist struggling families during this season in which we rejoice in Christ’s birth.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at a later date.
