Drunk on the road: Police arrest five in just over five hours

Waterloo Regional Police arrested five drivers for impaired offences on roadways throughout Waterloo Region in just over five hours.

In Cambridge, shortly after 7:20 p.m., on May 3, police responded to the area of King Street East and Chopin Drive after receiving a report of a possible impaired driver at a retail store. Upon police conducting a traffic stop of a Ford pickup truck, the driver attempted to flee on foot and assaulted an officer. Officers deployed a conducted energy weapon (CEW) and arrested the driver. The driver, a 63-year-old male, was charged with operation while impaired, operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration, and assault with intent to resist arrest.

In Kitchener, on May 3, 2024, at approximately 11:45 p.m., police received reports of a BMW striking two unoccupied vehicles parked on the side of the road in the area of Ingleside Drive and Dalegrove Drive. Police and Region of Waterloo Paramedic Services responded and located the male driver in the BMW on Ingleside Drive. The driver was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. There were no other physical injuries reported. The driver, a 36-year-old Kitchener male, was charged with operation while impaired, operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration, dangerous operation, and failure to comply with a release order.

In total, 14 charges for impaired-related offences were laid during the period between 7 p.m. on May 3 and 1 a.m. on May 4. Charges included operation while impaired, operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration, refusal to comply with demand, flight from police, and dangerous operation.
