GUELPH – A Guelph man has been arrested for fraud after a Cambridge man purchased a car only to find it was the subject of a significant lien.
On Dec. 3, the Cambridge man attended a Guelph parking lot to complete the purchase of a 2016 Volkswagen Passat, which had been advertised on an online marketplace. The seller was provided $1,000 cash and an e-transfer for another $8,000.
Approximately two weeks later the buyer attempted to register the vehicle, only to find it was the subject of an active lien from a financing company for almost $28,000 and a bailiff would be assigned to repossess the vehicle.
The victim attempted to contact the seller, who blocked him on all social media and did not reply to messages. The suspect was identified and on Monday turned himself in to police.
A 29-year-old Guelph man is charged with fraud over $5,000.
