Waterloo Regional Police have arrested and charged a driver after responding to a driving complaint in Cambridge.

On Sept. 3, 2022, at approximately 9:15 a.m., officers from WPRS’ Neighbourhood Policing South Division received a report from Cambridge Bylaw Enforcement officers of a blue Honda being driven erratically in a parking lot in the area of Christopher Drive and Champlain Boulevard.

Officers responded to the area and located the vehicle, which was running and occupied by the driver. When police attempted to speak with the male driver, the male put the vehicle into drive, drove towards one of the officers, and fled the parking lot at a high rate of speed. The officer was able to react quickly and move out of the way to avoid being struck. A pursuit was not initiated due to public safety concerns.

With assistance from the public, police located the vehicle and driver a short time later in a parking lot in the area of South Street and Centre Street. The driver attempted to flee on foot and was arrested by officers after a brief foot pursuit.

As a result of the investigation, a 42-year-old Cambridge male has been charged with several offences, including:

  • Operation while impaired
  • Dangerous operation
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Flight from peace officer
  • Resist arrest
  • Possession of stolen property Under $5,000

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.
