A Cambridge man is in custody after he barricaded himself in a home in the area of Lawrence and Garden streets in Preston for eight hours Sunday.

Waterloo regional police were called to the home on around 11:45 a.m. for reports of a disturbance. Upon arrival of police, a man barricaded himself inside the residence.

The other occupant of the home had already escaped but due to the nature of the threats, nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.

After several hours of ongoing negotiation attempts, the man exited the residence at around 7:45 p.m. and was taken into custody without incident by members of the Emergency Response Team.

As a result of the investigation the 46-year-old man was charged with assault with a weapon and mischief under $5,000.

The accused was held in police custody for a bail hearing.
