Man who barricaded himself in Preston home for several hours safely arrested

Armoured vehicles were parked in the parking lot of Karl Hommuth Arena this morning.

Waterloo regional police arrested a 46-year-old Cambridge man early this morning after he barricaded himself in an apartment unit near Hamilton and Beck streets for several hours.

Police were called to the home last night at around 6:20 p.m., for a report involving an unwanted male. The man was not permitted to be inside the residence.

Upon police arrival, the man refused to cooperate with officers and eventually barricaded himself inside.

Police continued with negotiations in efforts to safely remove the man from the unit, but were unsuccessful.

The WRPS’ Mobile Command Post and the Emergency Response Team (ERT) were deployed and remained set up a the Karl Homuth Arena until just before noon this morning.

Due to safety concerns, ERT made entry into the unit and arrested the man who was charged with the following:

  • Mischief under $5000
  • Unlawfully in a dwelling house
  • Uttering threats to damage property
  • Break and enter a dwelling house to commit an indictable offence

The man was held in police custody for a bail hearing.
