Waterloo Regional Police have arrested two out-of-region males in a fraud investigation being perpetrated in Cambridge.

On Feb. 7, members of the financial crime unit arrested two Brampton males in Cambridge who were attempting to defraud an elderly victim using the 'grandparent scam'.

The males were charged with fraud over $5,000, police said in a news release.

The investigation is ongoing. Both males are scheduled to appear in court in March.

Police said the scam is a fraud in which suspects pose as family or friends and convince the victim they have been arrested and require money to be bailed out of jail.

"Victims often lose thousands of dollars before realizing the situation is untrue and they are being taken advantage of," police said.

Anyone with information regarding this or similar incidents is encouraged to contact the Waterloo Regional Police at 519-570-9777, or for anonymous information to contact Waterloo Crime Stoppers.
