Police investigate report of taxi scam

Police say person's debit card compromised after she was asked to help out a 'passenger' of a 'taxi'

On May 26, 2021, Waterloo Regional Police received a report that a Cambridge resident had fallen victim to a “taxi scam.”

The victim reported that she was sitting outside her residence in the area of Bruce Street on May 22, 2021 when a taxi pulled up beside her.

A male passenger requested assistance with paying for his cab fare as the taxi driver would not accept cash. The passenger offered to give the victim the cash if she could pay with her debit card. The victim agreed and made payment with a hand-held debit machine.

A day later, the victim attempted to use her debit card and realized it had been compromised.

The male passenger has been described as being in his early 20s, approximately 5’7” tall, with a slim build.

The taxi driver has been described as male, white, late 30s, with curly black shoulder length hair. He was wearing a ball cap and a blue mask.

The vehicle has been described as black, with signage that stated ‘taxi’.

Police are reminding the public to be vigilant and not lose sight of their debit or credit cards when making payments of any kind.

If someone suspects they have been a victim of this type of scam and have not yet reported it, please contact police.
