Police lay charges in Hespeler Road crash that killed two in May

A 21-year-old man from Welland faces several charges, including two counts of impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death

A 21-year-old Welland man is facing 14 charges in relation to a crash that killed a 51-year-old Cambridge man and 30-year-old Pickering man in May.

On May 12, 2022, at approximately 11:50 p.m., emergency services responded to the area of Hespeler Road and Sheldon Drive, for a motor vehicle collision.

Through their investigation, Waterloo regional police determined that a Hyundai was travelling north on Hespeler Road when the driver allegedly drove into the side of a Toyota that was travelling south on Hespeler Road. The Toyota rolled over as a result of the collision.

The driver of that vehicle, a 51-year-old man who was originally identified as being from Florida but was later identified as a Cambridge resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 30-year-old Pickering man who was a passenger in the Hyundai, was also pronounced dead at the scene.

On Friday, members of the WRPS Traffic Unit announced they have arrested and charged the 21-year-old Welland male with 14 Criminal Code and Highway Traffic Act related offences, including two counts of dangerous driving causing death, two counts of impaired operation causing death and impaired operation - blood Alcohol Concentration above 80 mg.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court on July 22. 

Police are continuing to investigate the collision.
