Road rage incident in Cambridge leads to charges

Police say Tesla and motorcycle were weaving in and out of traffic before car struck motorcycle

Police have charged two drivers after responding to a collision in Cambridge yesterday that police described as a road rage incident that ended with the car hitting the motorcycle and the motorcycle crashing and catching on fire.

Waterloo Regional Police said on Sept. 3 at around 11 a.m., emergency services responded to reports of a collision near Hespeler Road and Eagle Street North.

A silver Kawasaki motorcycle and a white Tesla had been travelling south on Hespeler Road at high speeds, weaving in and out of traffic, police determined.

"The Tesla struck the motorcycle, causing it to slide across the intersection and catch on fire," police said in a news release.

The driver of the motorcycle fled the scene. Police located him near McGovern Drive and Old Hespeler Road. He was arrested and transported to a local hospital with minor physical injuries, police said.

The driver of the Tesla was arrested at the scene.

Police say the motorcyclist, a 28-year-old Fergus male, and the Tesla driver, a 54-year-old Cambridge male, were charged with stunt driving and dangerous operation.

Both drivers’ licences were suspended for 30 days and their vehicles were seized for 14 days. 

The 28-year-old male was also charged with:

  • Operation while prohibited
  • Driving while under suspension
  • Fail to remain
  • Drive motor vehicle - no plates
  • Fail to notify change of name
  • Owner operate motor vehicle on a highway - no insurance
