Waterloo Regional Police Service is urging SUV and pick up truck owners to be vigilant and to consider installing anti-theft devices following a recent spate of daytime vehicle thefts across Waterloo Region.

Since August 2023, police have received 13 reports of vehicle thefts or attempted thefts targeting late 1990s to late 2000s GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Silverado, or similar vehicles.

In most incidents, the vehicles were stolen during daytime hours from commercial shopping plaza parking lots and industrial areas.

The victims remained in possession of all keys to the vehicle at the time of the thefts.

Waterloo Regional Police Service would like to remind all vehicle owners to be vigilant in taking appropriate crime prevention measures pertaining to their vehicles, including removing tools, electronics, identity documents, wallets, passports, and other valuables when the vehicle is parked.

Aftermarket anti-theft devices such as steering wheel locks, theft alarms, and GPS tracking devices can be effective tools in preventing vehicle theft.

If you observe suspicious people who are looking into vehicles, we encourage you to call police immediately. This will assist investigators in tracking patterns of criminal behaviour and potentially identifying suspects.

A crime in progress can be reported by calling 911. Any non-emergency incidents can be reported by calling 519-570-9777.

These investigations remain ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to contact police at 519-570-9777.

Anonymous information can be provided to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
