Established in 1978, Langs Farm Village Association, now known as Langs, has grown into a vital support system for the community. Initially founded by a group with a shared vision of maintaining a safe environment and accessible services, Langs has evolved into a dynamic multi-service organization.

Adopting a community development approach, Langs provides various health, social, and recreational services that cater to the community's ever-changing needs. This evolution positions Langs as a thriving hub crucial to the neighborhood's well-being.

During the winter season, Langs provides support and programs for the community to address the seasonal depression issues.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) can manifest at any time of the year. Still, factors such as decreased sunlight, increased isolation due to weather conditions, and diminished social connections can particularly impact individuals during the winter months. SAD affects about 5% of the population, but up to 15% may experience similar struggles without a formal diagnosis. Regardless, behavioural strategies such as physical exercise, connection with others, and light therapy can be beneficial throughout the year.

In the face of the challenges associated with seasonal depression, Langs plays a crucial role in providing support. The indoor walking tracks at its leading site in Cambridge and the North Dumfries Community Complex offer a physical outlet to combat the emotional toll of the season. These spaces, coupled with a variety of adult fitness programs, contribute not only to physical well-being but also serve as a means to alleviate seasonal blues.

Programs are run at each of the Langs Sites, Main Site in Cambridge, North Dumfries and Grow Community Centre. Programs will differ by site. Contacting Langs will provide information to connect to the program at the site closest to you.

As January 15th approaches, a day often associated with increased feelings of low mood and holiday let-down, Langs stands ready to offer its supportive programs. Recognizing the significance of mental health, Langs encourages community members to engage in activities that bring joy, foster connections with loved ones, and seek professional support when needed.

Langs' Resource Centre, situated at its leading site, the Grow Community Centre, offers essential resources such as internet, phone, and fax services, employment assistance, and access to a dedicated Community Outreach Worker. Beyond these practical resources, Langs has become a cornerstone for health services, including primary care, mental health services, dental care, and health promotion programs.

Langs' mental health services are tailored to address seasonal depression, providing a holistic approach to well-being. Whether combating the blues associated with the season or offering ongoing support for mental health concerns, Langs remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a safe and supportive community.

In a world where seasonal changes can impact mental health, Langs stands as a beacon of hope, offering various services and programs that enrich lives and provide strength during challenging times. The organization's evolution reflects the power of community-driven initiatives in enhancing the quality of life for all.

The Resource Centre at Langs is open Monday to Thursday 830-8pm, Fridays from 830-430pm. The Resource Centre at Grow Community Centre is available Monday,Wednesday, and Friday from 12:00-4:00 pm and is located on Groh Ave.
