A sweet taste of Italy arrives in Cambridge

La Cakery celebrates its grand opening on Hespeler Road this week

The sweet taste of Italy has made its way to Cambridge

La Cakery celebrates its grand opening this week, offering a variety of baked goods including cakes, cupcakes, pastries, macarons, and cookies, all Italian stye.

The focus is the creation of quality baked goods, made fresh and with imported Italian ingredients

“We’ve had people say that they haven’t seen anything like this in a while, that it tastes like home, or that they haven’t tasted anything like this since being in Italy,” said La Cakery co-owner, Serena Bird.

“Often, you see a bakery attached to a deli. In Italy, bakeries are just that, bakeries only. We want to offer that experience, something different where you can walk into an Italian style bakery, here in Canada,”

Bird arrived in Canada from Italy almost 10 years ago, and brought with her a passion for baking and art.

As an expert baker and decorator, Bird continues her traditional Italian approach when it comes to baking. Whether for a wedding, baptism, birthday party or just a fancy order, her cakes are freshly baked for any occasion.

Each cake is a one of kind creation.

“We offer custom cakes for any occasion from a simple get together, to a big event,” Bird said.

“We have a great team of creative birthday cake specialists that will make somebody’s birthday even that more special. We also do custom design orders.”

For Bird, life events are precious.

“You deserve to celebrate them, and you can enjoy a truly unique piece of edible art,” Bird said.

Cake decorations are made from butter cream, fondant, whipped cream or both. There are many cake flavours and delicious fillings and icings, from chocolate or vanilla to red velvet and Italian rum cake.

La Cakery also offers sugar-free, dairy-free, lactose-free and eggless options.

With more than 15 years of perfecting her craft in Italy, Bird established La Cakery in Ontario in 2012. With the success of a London location, Bird is excited to offer her sweets in Cambridge.

“My son Giovanni is co-owner and when he suggested Cambridge, I thought, why not? We are so happy to bring La Cakery here,” Bird said.

“This is my passion.  It’s not even working for me. And everyone who works here, loves what they are doing. And that makes a difference.”

So far, Bird says people notice the difference when they visit the bakery on Hespeler Road, as they choose from a wide assortment of sweet creations.

“People enjoy the uniqueness, the variety, and the quality,” Bird said.

La Cakery ensures the highest quality baked goods.

“It’s definitely about the quality of our products. This is our priority Many of the ingredients are imported from Italy. You can really notice the difference and that’s what matters,” Bird said.

“Even out pistachios are imported as well as our almond based ingredients. Our products are kosher, with no lard, and sugars are cut in half,” Bird said.

La Cakery remains true to its Italian roots and heritage.

“There is such a variety of pastries,” Bird said.

“And they all taste truly Italian.”
