A fresh taste of India arrives in Cambridge

'Everything we make is served fresh and made here. That is a big thing for me, serving quality and an assortment of dishes'

If the aroma of traditional Indian cuisine such as tandoori or butter chicken sets your mouth watering, here's good news. A taste of India has arrived in Cambridge with a new restaurant, Namaste London Bar and Grill.

The restaurant, on Beech Street in Hespeler, opened just two weeks ago. Chef and owner Rajesh Kumar said he’s received a warm welcome so far and looks forward to sharing his passion for Indian cuisine with the Cambridge community.

With a wide variety of dishes to choose from including tandoori and a range of curry options, wraps and desserts, Kumar said Namaste London serves traditional Indian dishes prepared daily with only fresh ingredients.

“Everything we make is served fresh and made here. That is a big thing for me, serving quality and an assortment of dishes,” Kumar said.

Those who shy away from spicy foods will not feel out of place at Namaste London.

“Our butter chicken is a favourite with fresh tomatoes, cream, butter and honey. It’s nice and mild and everyone loves it,” Kumar said.

“The paneer made with spinach is quite popular and our lentil dish takes 24 hours to prepare. Spring rolls, samosas, papadums, chickpeas and rice pudding are always a favourite.”

For those who do enjoy a bit of spice, there are many options to choose from.

“For something a little spicier, the beef korma is a must-try,” Kumar said.

Kumar is proud to feature a buffet at Namaste London during the week.

People really love the buffet where they can come, sit down and enjoy,” Kumar said.

Namaste London also has a bar area. Kumar said he has recently applied for a liquor licence and looks forward to having this open soon.

In 1996, Kumar began working as a chef in India, getting his start in some of the larger hotels.

“Someone suggested opportunities in Canada and so I came. I moved to Edmonton with my family in 2009, and then to Brampton where I opened my first Namaste London location,” Kumar said.

“I thought I would give Cambridge a try and today things are going well, and everyone says that they enjoy our food.”

Namaste London is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and closed on Tuesdays. The restaurant is available for delivery and takeout and also offers live catering for any special event.

“It’s a good location. We look forward to seeing how it goes here in Cambridge,” Kumar said.

“Right now, we look forward to getting to know the community, and we are very happy to be here.”
