The application deadline for rare Charitable Research Reserve's Ages Fund Research Fellowships and Bursaries program is approaching.

Canadian and international graduate students planning to do research projects at rare have until Sunday, April 2, to submit their applications for one of two $5,000 scholarships or one of up to five $1,000 bursaries.

The Ages Fund Research and Bursaries programs funds graduate student research in the preserved natural areas of rare in Waterloo region, offering access to a relatively undisturbed site close to urban areas.

“These can offer excellent points of comparison for research,” explains James Bow, communications officer at rare. “We’ve hosted several projects that have used rare as a control site to study the impact of urbanization on local wildlife. Last summer, Sumia Ali, an MA candidate at McMaster University, worked on a project on the experiences of Black women in Toronto regarding air quality and air pollution.”

The fellowship program includes a $5,000 award in support of Black, Indigenous, and other People of Colour (BIPOC) graduate students.

The research the award funds must have an environmental component and take place at least partly at the rare Charitable Research Reserve between May 2023 and April 2024. The winning applicants will be required to provide a final report to rare a year after receiving their prize, which includes a list of any presentations or publications of the work to date.

Julia Aplin, MES candidate at York University, received a $1,000 bursary in 2022 for their project entitled Embodiment as Kinship: Human Tree Relations.

“I am very grateful to rare for supporting my work. I grew up in Cambridge, beside the Grand River, and it is especially meaningful to be returning to do my research in this place I love,” she said.

“The successful applicant will be notified on or before July 15,” Bow adds. “But applications can be awarded earlier, depending on the start date of the research. Applicants should submit their application at least four weeks before a research project’s anticipated start date.”

Up to $15,000 is available to be awarded to graduate students this year.
