The city made a splash with pool installations last year.

Swimming pools were deemed one of the most popular home improvements in 2021, Ontario saw a 33 per cent increase in pool permits issued from the year prior.

The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation, also known as MPAC, did an analysis of Ontario home building permits and counted 9,059 swimming pool permits were issued.

A continuing trend from the 53 per cent increase MPAC recorded from 2019 to 2020.

“The pandemic likely continued to put a focus on the home,” said Carmelo Lipsi, MPAC vice-president and chief operating officer in a release.

“Whether it’s because people were staying close to home due to restrictions, or were uncertain about future travel, many property owners invested in a pool as part of creating a backyard oasis to enjoy with family or friends.”

Cambridge ranked ninth in MPAC’s top 10 list for municipalities with the highest number of swimming pool permits issued. Cambridge recorded 153 new permits in 2021.

The City of Ottawa was named Ontario’s swimming pool capital for the second year in a row, having issued 1, 372 pool permits in 2021. The City of Hamilton was listed in second with 566 pool permits issued to residents to help them beat the summer heat.
