The population of Cambridge grew by 1.7 per cent over the last year, topping out at 144,810 in 2022 according to a new report by the Region of Waterloo.

The city added just over 1,000 new households last year for a total of 52,480. Each home has an average of 2.71 persons..

The city's 2022 population growth lagged the region's two other cities each of which saw their populations jump 2.7 per cent to reach 277,910 in Kitchener and 151,400 in Waterloo.

Waterloo region overall experienced significant population and housing growth since 2020, which over the last year alone shot up by 2.36 per cent.

The total population of Waterloo region is estimated at 647,540, including university and college students who reside here while studying.

The number represents an increase of 14,950 people from year end 2021.

The number of households is estimated at 232,540, which is an increase of 5,120 new households since 2021, a growth rate of 2.25 per cent.

The report says growth has been driven by strong enrollment increases at the region's three post secondary institutions, specifically growth in international students as well as strong migration to the region.

The number of post secondary students who called the region home was 35,820 last year, the majority of them residing in the city of Waterloo.

It's anticipated the rate of growth will remain at these levels until at least 2025 and is consistent with federal immigration targets.
