The Waterloo Catholic District School Board won’t be holding a by-election to fill the vacant seat left by Kitchener-Wilmot trustee Wendy Ashby.

How to proceed with an appointment is still to be determined.

A number of options were considered at the May 29 board meeting but nothing was decided.

The trustees have instead opted to delay the decision and consult legal advice on the best way to proceed.

With the Waterloo Region District School Board looking to fill two vacant seats, it also decided against a by-election and were discussing appointment options Monday night at its board meeting. A by-election was determined to cost $214,000 for Waterloo alone, with the price tag for the other cities and townships not known.

Ashby's seat became vacant after she resigned following controversial tweets made to her personal Twitter account aimed at White Christians. The social media posts spurred outrage among many parents of students in the Catholic board and prompted protests at board meetings.

The seat official opened at last week’s meeting when her resignation was formalized.
