Waterloo Region Chair Karen Redman and Cambridge Mayor Kathryn McGarry were at the groundbreaking Thursday for Habitat for Humanity's latest project at 325 Shantz Hill Road.

Twenty stacked town homes will soon fill a vacant site on Shantz Hill Road in Cambridge, housing local families who wouldn’t otherwise be able to enter the housing market.

The latest Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region project broke ground Thursday with the help of Waterloo Region Chair Karen Redman and Cambridge Mayor Kathryn McGarry.

“We know affordable housing is more than putting a roof over someone’s head, it’s a safe and secure place to call home and a chance at so much more,” said McGarry in a press release.

“Housing is a priority for us here in Cambridge and Waterloo Region. We are grateful for community partners like Habitat for Humanity and for this investment in our city’s future.”

“As a resident of Cambridge, myself, I know how wonderful it is to raise my family here in a community that is growing but still has that small town feel,” said Habitat CEO Philip Mills in the release.

Habitat has been building affordable housing for lower income families since 1988, partnering with working, lower income families to give them a hand up, to build strength, stability and independence through affordable home ownership, said the release.
