Planning phase for Galt Core Heritage Conservation District begins Wednesday with public meeting

The city will host the first of two public information centre open houses on the Galt Core Heritage Conservation District Project Wednesday starting at 6 p.m.

The virtual meeting requires participants to register with an email address.

City council initiated the Heritage Conservation District Study for the Galt Core Area in July 2020 and agreed on the final scope of the project last fall.

That scope includes 271 buildings in Galt's core that are recognized for having a unique historic character.

Heritage Conservation Districts (HCDs) are areas protected by a by-law passed under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act.

District designations are put in place to help conserve and enhance historic areas, guide future development so that it has a positive impact on local areas, and help maintain a sense of place and pride.

Developing a plan for the HCD is done in consultation with the local community, and includes policies policies for conserving and enhancing the district's character.
