Preston Lawn Bowling Club ready for busy summer season

Lawn bowling club kicks off the season with a free open house to mark National Bowls Day on June 3

From special events, barbecues, tournaments and leagues, The Preston Lawn Bowling Club has enough to satisfy anyone who’s craving a fun and affordable summer sport.

This Saturday, the Preston Lawn Bowling club is encouraging everyone to come check out their open house and celebrate National Bowls Day.

The day gives newcomers and current members the chance to throw some bowls, enjoy refreshments and learn about the different events and programs the club has to offer.

“It’s got to be one of the cheapest sports around, for the first year it’s a $150 and $200 for returning members for the season, that price allows you to come to all our social events, you can bowl three nights a week, plus we’re putting in one more daytime event,” said Dave Allen, honorary past president of the Preston Lawn Bowling Club.

The open house will run from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be another open house on June 5 as well as a Bring A Friend night on June 15.

Allen said that the club will try to host a barbecue once a week and a Christmas Sunday during summer.

The annual Beer & Beverage League will have an orientation June 22 and run from June 29 on every Thursday until Aug 31.

There will be a $35 affiliation fee for non-members and $10 at the door every Thursday night. The league will begin a 7 p.m. and finish around 9 p.m.

Allen who has been involved in the league since the year 2000 said he enjoys seeing what he can do to help around the club and seeking new ways of getting money.

“Up until this year, we just did five years where I did a first responders’ tournament and they had a barbecue, they were given lessons and two games, and they didn’t get to pay anything,” said Allen. “The prize money we gave out to the first responders had the choice to donate to funds to the charity of their choice.”

Allen said there were over $3,000 worth of prizes for the responders to choose from during the event.

Tournaments will be at least once month and include a variety of different options for players to participate in.

“We used to do daytime tournaments now we are trying something new, and they are all in the evening with two games and desert in between,” said Allen.

Aussie Open Pairs will be held in June, Open Triples will take place in July with Men and Women pairs running in August.

The annual Harvest Bowl Tournament will be held in in the fall for members only.

Summer programs will run to the end of September, for people interested in signing up can visit www.prestonbowl.org or drop by in-person at the Preston Lawn Bowling Club on 427 Queenston Rd., Cambridge.
