Roller skating is coming to Cambridge Centre mall

The rink at the mall has sat vacant since before the COVID-19 pandemic

After years of sitting empty and dark, the rink at the Cambridge Centre mall will soon be buzzing with skaters.

It just won't be on ice.

SUSO Skate Co., a Toronto based roller skating company, has announced the company will be running events at the rink from May until August.

It's slightly different than the original September to May timeline that was initially anticipated, but they're happy to be calling the mall home.

"The space is perfect," said Henry O'Brien, co-owner of SUSO Skate Co.

"It's exciting. We're happy that we can bring value to the mall and provide a fun activity for the community."

The company often targets malls or empty department stores to set up in for a few months at a time. Originally targeting Guelph as their next home, O’Brien and his team saw a great opportunity in Cambridge.

The size of the facility, the university and college demographic and proximity to other cities made the location a perfect fit, he says.

"We're blessed there's such a big space to work with," he said.

"Ultimately what we try to do is bring as many eye balls, hype and foot traffic to the mall as possible. We try to cross promote where we can. People can grab dinner then come for a skate."

With the news that Retro Rollers Inc. is returning to the Galt Arena Gardens every Friday from May to August, residents will now have multiple roller skating options this summer.
