The City of Cambridge wants to drop the speed limit on Speedsville Road, citing a laundry list of hazards that warrant reducing the limit to 60 km/hr between Middle Block Road and the Highway 401 overpass.

City engineers completed a recent assessment after area residents raised a number of concerns and asked to lower the 70 km/hr limit.

Speed limits along the stretch now go from 50 km/hr between Eagle Street and the overpass, switch to 70 km/hr until Middle Block Road, then drop back to 60 km/hr on the bend toward Kossuth Road.

The area south of Maple Grove Road is also growing rapidly. Traffic volumes are expected to increase as more people move into the River Mill subdivision around Equestrian Way.

To determine what speed is appropriate for the road, engineers used Transportation Association of Canada guidelines to look at nine factors including horizontal alignment, lane width, roadside hazards, pedestrian and cyclist exposure and intersections with roads and private driveways.

They concluded the 60 km/hr limit will help address the majority of concerns.

Council is expected to approve the recommendation next week. The cost of replacing signs is estimated at $1,000.
