Since 1921, firefighters from Cambridge have assisted thousands of families with a traditional Christmas meal, gifts, and some good old-fashioned Christmas cheer.

“It’s amazing. It’s been 100 years. The basket fund has grown exponentially, thanks to all of the support from the community, every year,” said Kevin Gibbs, chair of the Cambridge Fire Fighters Basket Fund committee.

The Cambridge Fire Fighters Basket Fund operates with over 130 dedicated fire fighter association members and community volunteers, who come together every year to assist to local families during the holidays.

“We will be preparing 400 baskets this year. This includes a turkey, potatoes and all the fixings for a traditional Christmas dinner,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs says that this year, there is a need for non-perishable items to help fill the baskets.

“We are so thankful to all of the local schools and businesses who help us collect items for our baskets every year. Anyone who would like to make a monetary contribution or donate non-perishable food items, they can e-mail, or call us,” Gibbs said.

“After collecting the items, volunteers help sort and then prepare the baskets. I’ve been doing this for over 12 years, and every year, it’s amazing to see everyone come together. We have firefighters and their families help out, and many volunteers."

It’s a lot of work and a big process, but Gibbs says everyone does it to help their community.

“Without the dedication of our members, their families, and the generous community volunteers, we would not be able to help so many people in need of assistance at this time of year.”

Last year, due to the pandemic, The Cambridge Fire Fighters Basket Fund provided gift cards only, but this year, Gibbs says it feels good to “get back at it” with traditional baskets for local families.

“We also partner with the Food Bank and the Salvation Army who are collecting toys this year,” Gibbs said.

“Schools, companies, and businesses in Cambridge are so generous. That is why the Basket Fund is so successful every year.”

The Cambridge Fire Fighters Basket Fund usually holds a variety of events in preparation for the Basket Fund but because of the pandemic, Gibbs says it wasn't possible this year.

"But we are still here,” Gibbs said.

“Thank you to our members, their families our dedicated community volunteers, and the generous people of our community.”

The Cambridge Fire Fighters Basket Fund is currently seeking donations of non-perishable food items. To make a donation, email [email protected] or call (519) 240-7640.
