Cambridge man dies in hit-and-run collision on Hwy 401 (update)

Police say car travelling at extreme speeds rear-ended victim's car, which was travelling in same direction

UPDATE:

Police say a car involved in a hit-and-run that resulted in the death of a Cambridge driver was travelling at "extreme speeds" and they are now on the hunt for the driver, who fled the scene on foot.

A 29-year-old man from Cambridge was killed in the collision after his car was struck by a white Audi S5 on Highway 401 at Mavis Road in Mississauga on Saturday at 2:20 a.m.

Police said the Audi was travelling at extreme speeds when it collided with the rear of a Mazda 3, travelling in the same direction.

The severity of the impact caused the Mazda to launch into a spin and strike a guardrail before coming to rest, the OPP said in a news release.

The lone occupant of the Mazda was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Portions of Highway 401 near Mavis were closed for several hours while emergency crews and investigators were on scene.

The Mississauga Detachment of the OPP, along with units from the OPP's Highway Safety Division, continue to investigate the collision.

Investigators are looking to identify the driver of the Audi.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or have dash cam video is asked to call the Mississauga OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
