A motorcycle collision on Highway 401 near Cambridge that claimed the life of a 55-year-old Barrie man Monday morning may have been caused, in part, by someone riding a bicycle on the highway.

Officers from the OPP's Highway Safety Division in Mississauga are working with the Cambridge detachment to investigate the single vehicle motorcycle collision.

On May 8, at 7:43 a.m., the OPP were called to Highway 401 westbound, between Highway 8 and Homer Watson Boulevard, in Kitchener.

The rider of a motorcycle lost control, as traffic slowed ahead, and was thrown from the motorcycle, sustaining fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The OPP-HSD Traffic Support Unit is assisting with the investigation. Police said they received information that a cyclist may have been riding a bicycle just ahead of the collision scene resulting in the slow-down of traffic.

The investigation is ongoing, no charges have been laid. The westbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed at Highway 8 until 1 p.m. Monday, resulting in lengthy delays as westbound highway traffic was diverted down Shantz Hill to Fountain Street South.

Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call the Mississauga OPP - Cambridge office at 519-655-0150.
