GUELPH – Guelph police report a Cambridge man faces impaired and careless driving charges after a car slammed into a parked pickup truck Thursday.

Approximately 7:45 p.m. he was driving on Morris Street when his vehicle struck a parked full-size pickup. The force of the impact pushed the truck two metres onto a curb and snapped its front axle.

A passenger in the suspect’s vehicle struck his head on the windshield. The passenger fled before officers arrived, but was located nearby and observed to have significant swelling on his forehead and two black eyes. The driver was not injured.

The driver was showing signs of impairment and was arrested. Inside the vehicle officers located a pipe with burned tinfoil and suspected fentanyl residue. At the police station a drug recognition expert determined the man’s ability to operate a vehicle was impaired by drug consumption.

A 35-year-old Cambridge man is charged with impaired driving and careless driving causing bodily harm.
