Loaded gun and drugs seized after investigation, police say

Two from Cambridge charged with several criminal offences

Waterloo Regional Police Service’s Direct Action Response Team (DART) seized a loaded shotgun as a result of an investigation in Cambridge. On May 10, 2023, members of DART were conducting a proactive initiative in the Preston Heights area and conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle with unauthorized plates. The driver of the vehicle was arrested for driving while under suspension.

Through the investigation, police located and seized a loaded, sawed-off shotgun, ammunition, identity documents and suspected hydromorphone and cocaine.

The driver, a 41-year-old male and the passenger, a 45-year-old female, both from Cambridge, were charged with several criminal offences, including:

  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking
  • Careless use of firearm, weapon, ammunition (two counts)
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of weapon
  • Possession of prohibited or restricted firearm/ammunition
  • Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was firearm
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose

The male accused was also charged with possession of an identity document and numerous driving-related charges including driving while under suspension and owner operate motor vehicle - no insurance.

Both accused parties were held in police custody for a bail hearing.
