Waterloo Regional Police Service's Break, Enter, and Vehicle Theft Team is investigating an attempted vehicle theft in Cambridge.

On March 3, 2024, at approximately 2:40 a.m., officers in the area of Equestrian Way and Ridge Road observed a male enter a grey, newer-model Lexus SUV already occupied by two males.

The vehicle fled the area at a high rate of speed, nearly striking a fully-marked police cruiser. A suspect apprehension pursuit of the Lexus was not initiated.

Officers subsequently discovered a Toyota Tundra with a smashed rear window parked in the driveway of a residence on Equestrian Way.

Toyota Tundras are one of several newer model vehicles being targeted for reprogramming theft in Waterloo Region. Other vehicles currently being targeted include Jeep Wranglers, Toyota Highlanders, Ram pickup trucks, and Lexus SUVs.

Vehicle owners are encouraged to consider taking the following measures to help make their vehicle more secure:

  • Block access to the onboard diagnostic port to prevent thieves from reprogramming the vehicle's key fob (a simple device can be purchased online).
  • Use a steering wheel locking device to deter theft.
  • When not in use, place the vehicle key fob inside a radio frequency shielding bag/pouch to block cell signals.
  • Consider equipping your vehicle with an aftermarket Global Positioning System (GPS) tracker. The tracker may assist police in locating the vehicle and/or suspects.
  • Ensure all keys are accounted for and never left in the vehicle or unattended.

If you observe suspicious persons in your neighbourhood looking into vehicles, please call police immediately.
