One man was arrested at a protest that turned violent Saturday night in the area of Highway 7 and Shantz Station Road.

Waterloo Regional Police were called to the scene at around 7 p.m. where they say around 100 people were demonstrating at a planned event with around 200 attendees.

“The demonstration was between members within the Eritrean community,” WRPS said in a Facebook post.

Police say fights broke out between the protesters and the attendees.

“During the demonstration, protesters retrieved sticks and projectiles from vehicles and confronted police,” WRPS added in a news release.

“Protesters blocked the roadway, throwing projectiles at officers. Protesters continued to arrive and entered the area through surrounding fields.”

Paramedics were called in to treat non-life threatening injuries.

A 29-year-old Toronto man has been charged with assault with a weapon.

Police say roads in the area were shut down for approximately four hours.
