Police charge local teen for allegedly going 193km/h in a 60

The teen was one of five drivers facing stunt driving charges after police received complaints regarding high speeds on McQueen Shaver Boulevard

In one evening, Waterloo Regional Police charged five motorists with stunt driving in Cambridge.

On July 20, 2021, as a result of a complaints made by a members of the public, WRPS traffic officers conducted speed enforcement on McQueen Shaver Boulevard.

As a result, five motorists had their vehicle impounded and their licence suspended:

  • A 51-year-old Brantford female - allegedly travelling 114 km/h in the 60 km/h zone – charged with speeding and stunt driving.
  • An 18-year-old Cambridge female -  allegedly travelling 115 km/h in the 60 km/h zone  - charged with speeding and stunt driving. 
  • A 45-year-old Brantford female - allegedly travelling 116 km/h in the 60 km/h zone – charged with speeding and stunt driving.
  • A 25-year-old Cambridge male - allegedly travelling 164 km/h in the 60 km/h zone – charged with speeding and stunt driving, and;
  • An 18-year-old Cambridge male  - allegedly travelling 193 km/h in the 60 km/h zone – charged with stunt driving, and careless driving.

Police would like to remind motorists that new legislation came into effect on July 1, 2021. 

The Moving Ontarians More Safely Act, 2021 (MOMS Act) increased penalties for drivers who engage in dangerous behaviours on roadways, including stunt driving. 

Some of the changes include: 

  • Stunt driving charges will apply to motorists who travel 40 km/h over the posted speed limit on roadways that have a limit under 80 km/hr. 
  • For racing and stunt driving, there will be an increased licence suspension from seven to 30 days. Vehicle impoundments will move from seven to 14 days. 
  • Increased penalties for those convicted of street racing or stunt driving. 

The Waterloo Regional Police Service is committed to ensuring that roadways are safe for all users. "Stunt driving and aggressive speeds will not be tolerated in our Region," says Acting Staff Sergeant of Traffic Services, Mark Hammer.
